What is a Prosthodontist?

A prosthodontist is a dental professional whose skillset and focus is on restoring and replacing teeth. They receive several additional years of schooling and training to become a prosthodontist. The creation and implementation of dental appliances within the mouth fall primarily under the veil of prosthodontic dentistry.

A Prosthodontist is a dentist that practices prosthodontics, also known as dental prosthetics or prosthetic dentistry. This area is one of nine dental specialties that the American Dental Association recognizes with a focus on prosthesis and a requirement following dental school, of an additional 3 to 4 post-graduate years of training.

The American Dental Association defines Prosthodontics as "the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes. (Adopted April 2003)".

What is a dental appliance?

If someone loses a tooth or needs to have an existing tooth restored, often that procedure is accomplished with a dental appliance. Things like crowns, veneers, bridges, inlays, onlays, implants, and various forms of dentures are all considered dental appliances.

A prosthodontist is concerned with the creation of these appliances and how they will fit within each individual’s unique mouth.

How can dental appliances help?

The amount of useful applications for dental appliances are innumerable. From an oral health standpoint, the loss or degradation of teeth can have a massive negative impact on the mouth. Tooth loss is associated with the degradation of surrounding teeth, a change in the bite, [[[10462|bone loss in the jaw]]], and a continued trend of tooth loss. Once you lose one tooth the chances of losing more skyrockets. Dental appliances can help to bring a mouth back to full health.

The structure of the face is supported by the teeth in your jaw, and without them can appear completely different. Not being able to trust your smile can be a hard thing to deal with. Loss of self-confidence and the willingness to smile can change even simple, everyday interactions with friends and co-workers.

Tooth pain and tooth loss can also have a very direct impact on a person’s ability to talk and chew. When you have to favor one side of your mouth can result in increased wear and damage to teeth. What is worse is when tooth loss is so prolific that a patient doesn’t even have a favorable side to chew with.

Speech can be affected in fairly substantial ways when tooth loss is present in the mouth. A Prosthodontist is concerned primarily with restoring form and function to the mouth. Giving someone the ability to speak or eat properly can do a great deal of good for them. Preventing a person’s oral hygiene from slipping into a downward spiral is one of the most valuable things that a dental profession can give and we are proud to offer that gift to our customers.
