Root Canal Therapy

Diagram of a root canalIn the grand scale of human history, root canals have only been around for a very brief period. Before root canal therapy, if your tooth suffered from extreme decay or if the root became infected that tooth would be lost. All kinds of bad things can arise from a tooth that is infected and not dealt with, including the loss of additional teeth. Now we are able to save these teeth using root canal therapy, which will allow them to remain a viable tooth for many years to come.

What is the purpose of a root canal?

The purpose of a root canal is to save a tooth that would otherwise need to be removed. Why not just lose the tooth, you ask? Because tooth loss can be a very costly endeavor. When teeth are lost and not replaced, it can become hard to eat the foods you like, speak clearly, and your self-confidence can even suffer. Also, the loss of one tooth can often lead to the loss of neighboring teeth and so forth.

If you lose a tooth and need to replace it, that can end up being quite expensive when compared to root canal therapy. Many tooth replacement options only give you the aesthetic of having the tooth, but are not able to help you eat and offer no added oral health benefits.

What to Expect

Root canal therapy is a simple procedure that we can perform in our office. The procedure starts with numbing agent being applied to the areas around the tooth. Your total comfort during the procedure is our number one concern. We will allow the numbing agent to take effect and then we will begin by drilling a small hole in the top of the tooth.

We use this hole to access the inner portion of the tooth, where the root lies. Our goal is to remove the root and any decaying material within the tooth. This can take some time and may involve several trips to our office to complete. Once the root and all the decay has been removed from the tooth we will be ready to fill the empty space with an inert material call gutta percha. This will give the tooth the support that it needs to continue functioning in your mouth for years to come.

Many people wonder how much the loss of the root will affect your tooth and the answer is – not much. The main function of the root is to encourage the tooth to emerge from below the gums and give it sensation.

If your tooth starts to hurt or ache, this is a sign that you may need a root canal or that you should schedule an appointment to be seen by us.
