Do People Still Choose Gold Crowns?

A diagram of how a dental crown works. With improvements in dentistry and related technology, there are more options than ever that can restore your teeth discreetly.

Porcelain and composite resin are two of the newest materials, and they can be used to make restorations that can match the exact color and shape of your teeth.

In the past, metal options were the only thing from which you could choose, and even today there are some reasons that people might choose gold crowns.

When Your Dentist Might Recommend a Gold Crown

Gold crowns are incredibly durable and can /withstand heavy chewing forces. Since they don't break or chip easily, they are a long-lasting dental restoration and are a good option for the molars.

When they are placed in the back of the mouth, they are less noticeable, but can protect your natural tooth from the forces of your chewing.

Gold crowns aren't completely immune to problems. They can become loose, but this is often due to eating candy or foods that aren't recommended with crowns.

In other cases, they might break, but this is usually due to problems with the underlying tooth structure - either decay or a fracture can weaken the natural tooth and could cause the crown to fail.

Choosing a Gold Crown

Deciding to cap your tooth with a gold crown is a personal decision, and it is one that your dentist can help you to make. If you grind your teeth or exhibit a heavy pattern of wear, your dentist will most likely recommend this option.

However, if you have a metal allergy, this option likely isn't going to be your best choice, so you should make sure your dentist is aware of this issue.

You should also consider that gold is a fairy expensive alloy, so this restoration might be more expensive than other crown options.
