Replacing Missing Teeth with Dental Bridges

A diagram of how a dental bridge works.A dental bridge is a great way to restore the appearance of your smile by replacing missing teeth. Bridges are made up of a series of false teeth to fill in the gap and two or more crowns that will cover the adjacent abutment teeth.

The crowns will be used to anchor the bridge to the surrounding teeth in order to bridge the gap and improve the appearance of your smile.

Why Might Someone Choose a Dental Bridge?

There are a variety of options out there to deal with missing teeth, but there numerous benefits to bridges that make this restoration stand out. Dental bridges can give you back your ability to speak and chew properly, and they can help you to maintain your facial shape, which can be a major problem when you are missing teeth.

Perhaps most importantly, a dental bridge can ensure that the rest of your teeth will stay in their proper position, preventing future restorative work.

What is the Process of Getting a Bridge?

To get a dental bridge, you'll need at least two appointments. During the first visit, the abutment teeth next to the gap will be prepared. Some of the enamel will need to be removed so that there is adequate room for the crown that will slip over them. Impressions of your teeth will also be made so that the false teeth in the bridge can be created. You may also receive a temporary bridge to wear until your permanent restoration is ready.

During the second appointment, your new metal or porcelain bridge will be fitted. Any necessary adjustments will be made, and if it is determined that the appliance fits properly, it can be cemented into place. If cared for adequately, this bridge can last for up to 15 years as long as you regularly visit your dentist and engage in good oral hygiene practices.
